Mortal Tears: October
Good things:
Nice site with plenty of room and enough warm cabins with bunks for all, nicely set-dressed.
Friendly people.
I should write more, seeing as how it was an okay weekend, but some negative things overshadowed what should have been an enjoyable weekend.

Bad things )

Experimental baking: Rhubarb bread
We have rhubarb that needs using. The rhubarb crisp I made a few weeks ago was okay. The zuchinni bread I made a few weeks ago was good.

I now have rhubarb bread in the oven. I took a recipe for pumpkin bread and used that as a basis, adding more sugar and some vanilla. And thinly sliced rhubarb instead of pumpkin mush. I'll report back on how my little experiment turns out.

THE VERDICT: Needed a little bit more grease in the pans, they were difficult to get out. I was worried it would turn out too tart or too soggy (as rhubarb can "weep" extra moisture). I think I perhaps over-compensated on the tartness and added maybe 1/3 of a cup too much sugar. The moisture level is about right tho. Overall: not bad.

Epiphany
Y'know what? I had a bit of an epiphany about why all this OOC nonsense from M is still driving me crazy.

It's obvious that they think I am some sort of horrible baby-eating fun-killing villain (which is bothering enough). I tried to make nice/apologize four separate times and have been rebuffed and given the cold shoulder by them each time.

What's really getting my goat and not allowing me to put this away is their not accepting my apology so we can put this behind us properly. Everyone else is saying "Just forget it. You never talk to them again, and they'll never talk to you again. Everything will be fine." Which sounds like reasonable advise on the outside. But this plan is obviously not working for me.

Amish Vampire Novels and weapons
My step-dad is part of an email list about various cultural stuff as part of his work that he uses to share ideas with like-minded people. Here is an interesting, though completely non-work related excerpt:

Oddness
In the last two weeks we've had two cars pull over in front of our house due to running out of gas.

The first time it was past dark and the neighbor across the street came knocking on our door to see if we knew anything about a car parked on our property. He and I took a flashlight down to check it out and found a note on the windshield OUT OF GAS - BACK SOON. I listened for the rest of the night, but didn't hear anything. In the morning the car was gone.

The second time was this evening, a man pulled into our driveway with his flashers blinking. We went out to see what the problem was - out of gas. We gave him some gas from our lawnmower supply and gave him directions to the nearest gas station.

I'm only talking about the 100 feet of the road we can see from our front window.

Is it people not realizing they are running low? Is it people trying to scrimp and save, not realizing that gas doesn't work that way?

Odyssey: Darn it, I want to play
The Roman brief came out recently, and I've just had a chance to read it. Darn it, I want to play a Roman. A Roman wine-seller. With ties to a collegium to help watch my back and get the occasional free drink.

It's prop-intensive (cart, wine jugs, cups) and has a certain OOC expense each game (wine and such to sell). But it still sounds like a jolly fun romp.

For Ash's 32nd Birthday

Oh, umm...
Heard my phone ringing this morning, but didn't get to it in time. I could see it was one of my agencies and decided to wait for a minute to see if they were leaving me a voice message... instead a text message pops up from the agency: Please call us.

So I do.

"Hi, Carrie, are you still working for the Swine Flu Hotline?"
"Umm... No. I never got the call to come in for the training."
"Oh, um, right... There seems to have been a very large misunderstanding. I'll see if I can clear that up on our side."
"Okay..."
"Because {Company hosting the Hotline} is very interested in you."
"That's great, but we're leaving on holiday in a few days - I'll be back in two weeks."
"Great! I'll make a note to call you on the following Monday."

I think the call was supposed to be a 'where is your time-sheet for last week?' conversation. Very odd.

Update
Just got off the phone with Dad. Talked to Mom yesterday. Ugh, why am I going home again? The guilting is already starting about the amount of time spent with each parent. But to be frank, Mom is footing the bill for the flight and so does get "first dibs" (as called by my Dad) on our time. At least I can look forward to seeing my brother again.

*sigh*

On the other hand, the Carroctopus is done. Be afraid. It is just that 10% over "the line" of taste and decorum and thus isn't really something Aiko would enter. But is right down Primus' street.

Maelstrom query
The upcoming festival has a competition for Most Unusual Vegetable. Would it be taking the piss to make a larp-safe humorous carrot or potato or the like and enter it in place of an actual from-the-ground vegetable?

Marku!
Are you coming over on Friday? Both Ash and I are off. We do have some errands to run in the morning, I think. When is good for you?

Update
Work:
Got a call about potential work today. Part-time, but better than sitting at home.

Vikings:
While I've been sitting at home, I've been re-discovering my embroidery skills and doing some faux-Bayeux Tapestry pieces. Also been collecting wool from the moors - now I just need to learn how to spin. Taught Dru's mum how to tablet weave today out on the moors and got a bit sunburnt on my neck and wrists. But after a shaky start she seemed to get into the flow and ended up with a liking for it.

Maelstrom: Provocation
I know I was sitting for several long periods, but the overall impression is one of running around and murmuring "ohshitohshit" under my breath.

* Letters from home, oh me oh my
* New clan, and the politics thereof
* Husband bursting into the tent at _just_ the wrong time
* Quiet time with Lady Caterina - I think that 45min was the longest uninterrupted conversation I've had with her. And I only had to drag her out of a series of political meetings to give birth. Yes, the baby does get heavy after a weekend.
* Seeing old friends we had given up for dead.

A lot of other happenings as well but alas, FOIPy.

Update
Vikings:
Second try was a success, if hot and sunny. During set-up I got a bit burnt and am now mellowing to brown-as-a-nut.

Work:
Today was my last day. Have emailed my updated CV to two of my agencies, but have gotten cool responces: I'll keep an eye out for any suitable.

Nephew:
My step-sister Sara has had her baby: boy, healthy, 7lb 6oz, 27 hours of labor, c-section.
THIS JUST IN: Provisional name: Niko Alexander Hersurname Hissurname.

Questions from my mother:
We have now on Ch. 9 this British series – Doc Martin. Is it at all current, unlike others like Hyacinth Whatever or SummerWine? I assume that all stuff that gets here is old, but he actually uses a cell. I kind of like his irascible, short personality. If it is current, you probably don’t get to see it. Anyway, I’m wondering.

I’m also wondering exactly what “Bloody Hell” means and how strong an epithet it is?

Vikings - Corfe Castle
Overall: tearfully boring and frustrating.

I'm in two minds about going back right now. Yes, contact lenses would help if I weren't deathly afraid of them. But more, a supportive group would help. </div>
